Al,  Moi and  Oi

8/31/2012

Alec talked of himself in the third person.  He said he could not say me or I.  So he would say "Moi"  for ME and "Oi"  for I.   We'd say Alec, say  I want a cookie, and he'd say ,
"Al can't say OI"  so he'd say, "Al wants a cookie"  or "Oi want a cookie".  Then we'd say , Al say , Can you read that book to me,  and he would say,  "Al can't say Moi"   so he'd say , "Can you read that book to Moi"  or  "Can you read that book to Al".  So he onlyused Oi, Moi, but mostly Al.
It was funny to see people's reactions.  New people always thought Alec was talking about  his friend Al.
One time Alec said to  a new nurse,  "Al doesn't like that",  and the nurse said,  "Oh, who's  Al,   your friend?"
So when I write that Alec said,  "Why is mom holding Al so tight?" etc..
That is how Alec talked all the time.  In the third person.
It was just adorable and funny.

Alec loved Elmo and Elmo talks of himself in the third person too.

Help us brighten a child's day

8/29/2012

Alec's birthday is October 23,   and we would like to brighten other children's days for him on his birthday.  We are asking for your help on this if you can. We are going to spend what we would have spent on Al for his Birthday and however much more that we can,  but would like to touch as many kids as we can.
With Alec, it was always the little, simple things that brought him so much joy.
It was a book,  bubbles,  a cozy blanket, singing stuffed animals, giraffes, mini reese's peanut butter cups,   etc.
Our thoughts are to make October 23,  "Alec's day of Giving a Little Love Away/ Giraffe Day"   for the kids at The Jimmy Fund Clinic and Children's Hospital.
Your doantion/gift can be as small as a book, or a few dollars sent to us and we will purchase a special book,  bubbles etc.  Or if you can afford to spend more,  we will put it towards gifts for kids/ or a list of ideas will be listed below. We want to give things that were Al's favorites, things that were special to him.  We may also order special personalized toys/trinkets with Al's name and love on them.  Any amount or gift would be greatly appreciated.
Ideas:
_Books;  Al's favorites -- "Maisythe Mouse"  books by Lucy Cousins,  "Doctor Ted",  "Gaspard   the   Dogwalker",    "Curious George",  "But Not The Hippopotamus"--Books by Sandra Boynton,
"Llama Llama" ---
       basically any silly book
_Giraffes; all kinds
__
Blankets;  Super -Soft cozy blankets--big enough to fully cover child
_Bubbles
_Singing stuffed animals--just not loud ones
(or you can send money and we can purchase what you would like to give--no gift is too small)

Thank you very much

Scaris Wheel

We just took Cassidy on a ferris wheel and she was nervous until she got on and then was fine.
While we were on it, we remembered when we were at Hershey Park and we all hopped on the Ferris wheel, which was really big-- bigger than the usual ferris wheel.
I was scared,  so I grabbed onto Alec, hugging him tight,  I was afraid of being up so high and afraid Alec would fall out somehow.
Alec said to Keith,   "Dad, Is this ride scary?"  (because he could not see how high we were),       Keith said,  "No Al it's not scary",
then Alec said,  "Then why is Mom holding Al so tight"
When we got off the ride,      Alec said   "They should call it a Scaris Wheel because it's so scary"

Cassidy's Birthday gift from Al

8/23/2012

Yesteday was Cassidy's birthday and she was getting lots of calls from her loved ones.
Our phone has the time displayed on it.   The phone rang and it was a number we didn't recognize, so I told Cass she could answer it but not to give it to me if it was a telemarketer. She answered it and noone was there.  Then she saw the time of the call and it was 10:23   (Al's b-day).  She even tried to call the number back, but it didn't connect to anything.   We knew it was Alec letting her know he was with her on her birthday, and sending his love to his Taa, the sweetest bestest stista  in the whole world (Al's words) .

All day every time we looked at the clock it was  9:23, 10:23, 11:23, 12:23, 5:23,  6:23  ...

Leave handicap stalls for the handicap

8/21/2012

I feel I need to tell of the importance of reserving handicap bathrooms for handicap people.  Here's why;   a few weeks ago, I was at a public restroom and I was holding the door open and waiting for Cass and Kara (her bff).  While standing there, a mom brought her son into the bathroom.  He was in a wheel chair and had oxygen.  Someone was in the handicap stall, who was not handicap,  and this boy could not wait. So his Mom was helping him get up and try to fit into a regular stall with his tubes dangling and trying to reach the distance and then his oxygen tank fell onto the floor. It was heartbreaking to watch. Yet , if the handicap stall was free, his Mom could have wheeled right in with him and it would've been much, much easier for him and her.

Then last night, it happened again, an elderly women using a walker was waiting to use the bathroom and when Cassidy came out of the stall, I asked the women if she wanted to go in and she said she needed a handicap stall, but they were all taken (by non-handicap people). She said people don't honor them. I felt terrible because she was waiting while Cassidy went to the bathroom and then I while I went and when I came out she was still waiting.  Not fair.

I always needed the handicap stalls with Alec, and I would sometimes take Cassidy in them   because it gave us more room and less touching of the dirty bathroom stuff.
I will never use a handicap stall again, because however inconvenient it may be to wait a few minutes longer when the handicap stall is free, or however more convenient it would be so your kids don't touch the dirty walls, just think of how much , much more inconvenient it is for a person with a handicap to have to wait or fit into a regular stall-- because this boy could not wait the few minutes.
I  share this because I used to think that if noone was waiting,  then it was ok, but at any second someone could come in and need it.

BUBBLES

8/20/2012

Cassidy has found all of Alec's bubbles and has been blowing bubbles lately.  We have so many bottles of bubbles because Alec loved bubble wands-- not the bubbles.
On Alec's appointments to the Clinic, his most favorite thing to do was to go for a walk with   Cori-  his girlfriend,  Al told  everyone that she was his  Girlfriend,  she also was Al's as well as our family psychologist.  She was with Al and us from the beginning and became a trusted friend and just like family to us.
So Cass had found this bottle of bubbles from Germany, and I remembered how Cori ordered bubbles from everywhere --even Germany, and even bought bubbles when she was out with her husband for Alec.  Cori knew how much Al loved his bubble wands and his special time with her and she always went above and beyond for Alec in so many ways, which I'll share, but I'll stick to bubble wands for now.
Al would always come back from his walk with Cori to her office with 2 bubbles every time, and a big smile.  We would take out the bubble wands for Al and fix them just the way he liked , which was big business.  His favorite ones had a top and would wiggle, so we had to put a tiny piece of tissue into the cover and then fit the wand back into the cover so it wouldn't wiggle.  It had to be just right. And then he was happy with them and would carry them around.  And then we'd save the bubbles.

Giraffe   Face Painting

8/17/2012

 Beth ,  (my/our cousin) sent us this picture of her daughter, Shannon and wrote;
"I can't believe she chose by herself to get her face painted as a Giraffe"
I sent back that I can and can't believe it,  because we have never heard of anyone choosing a giraffe to have face painted on, and then of course a giraffe.  Beth sent back, "You Can't".  She said she had tears in her eyes when Shannon walked in with a Giraffe face.

I also want to share the signs Beth got from Alec. She was driving in NH  weeks ago and she drove by Scott Street,  then  ahead drove by a store with a Huge Giraffe out front, then ahead drove by Angel Autobody.  This all while Scott was in ICU , just days after his accident.  And then Shannon got the Giraffe face.

Maisy at the Dentist

8/15/2012

A few weeks ago, I took Cass to see Jenn ( Alec and Cass's favorite dentist hygenist)  to have her teeth cleaned again. Cass asked if I was going to go in with her, and I said whatever she wanted I would do. She let me come in.  While sitting there , I looked up and saw 2 pictures of dogs.
Jenn  (Al's favorite hygenist) always talks about her dogs.  I asked her if those were her dogs, ( this is not something I do, I avoid conversation at all costs, hoping not to talk to people),  She said the picture with the 2 dogs in it are her dogs. I said oh they are cute. Then she said "yup, that's  CHERRY and MAISY". I said your dog's name is Maisy? She said "yup Cherry and Maisy".  Me and Cass just looked at each other in amazement.  Then she said, "I named her Maisy after Maisy the Mouse from the books."  Now I started crying and me and Cass were looking at each other in complete awe.
I'm quite certain that Jenn doesn't have kids, she said she used to read Maisy books to a child she watched.  And I don't think Maisy is too well known.  So not only was it amazing  that her dogs name is Maisy, but that she is named after maisy the Mouse,  and that she told us without us asking why she named her Maisy
Al loved Maisy the Mouse so so so much. He loved the books  he had almost every one and he loved to get a new one. And he had a mini Maisy stuffed mouse that he slept with every night and she went almost everywhere with him,  Al said Maisy was his daughter.

And Alec loved cherries so much, he'd always ask, Are cherries in season?" because he loved them , but we could only get them in the summer.
And Jenn's other dog's name was Cherry.
Again another amazing sign from Al-- really amazing

Cassidy switches to Al's dentist

8/14/2012

So Cassidy took Al's advice and decided to try  his dentist, Dr. Mooney's.  Cass was not too keen on Dr. Yadzi her dentist,   on one of her visits they called her in and when we walked through the door instead of going left like she was suppose to, she went right into the bathroom and wouldn't come out. It took alot of convincing to get her to get her teeth cleaned.  Dr. Yadzi is nice,  just too busy.
Cassidy needed 2 teeth pulled and Keith took her to Dr. Mooney's and she did great and she said that they are so nice there.  And she was ready to make the switch.  So I set an appointment up for Cassidy's next cleaning at Dr. Mooney's.

This apptointment was just weeks after Al went to heaven.  And we decided we would take her because it was important to have her teeth cleaned.  We asked Keith's Mom to call and explain about Al before we went.   Just as we were getting close to leave,   Rich (my brother), stopped by and he told us that the roads were very icy. We decided to not drive in it and cancelled Cass's appt. and they rescheduled it for the next day or two.   I realized that I did not think to request Jenn (Al's favorite hygenist)  for Cassidy for either appt., I  just made her an appt. for a cleaning.  But Alec loved Jenn so I had hoped it was with her. So while we were waiting in the waiting room, I said to Cass,  If Al has anything to do with this,  you will have Jenn.  Next thing you know out comes Jenn and she calls Cassidy. I said that's Jenn.
Cass chose Dad to go in with her, and when they came out they told me that when Jenn gave Cass the mirror to look at her teeth, the back of the mirror said "Room 4".   Alec's favorite  and main classroom at his Hajjar school was Room 4--his special needs class. That's just what it was called  Room 4 , Al loved , loved, loved his Room 4 family.
So on the way home we were crying and smiling at the signs Al gave us,  then I said, I wonder if we had kept that first appointment, if Cassidy would've had Jenn. In my mind I planned on calling to ask. Then Keith said, No it wouldn't have been with Jenn because she told them that she just got home from Florida late the night of Cassidy's appt, that we canceled, so she wasn't here. So Cassidy would have had a different hygenist.
So we knew that Al made us cancel the appt. so Cass could have Jenn (his favorite), and made sure Dad and Cass saw that Jenn's room is Room4.
We all cried and smiled in awe at the signs Al gave us.
